Sesimbra is 30 minutes south of Lisbon airport. Praia das Bicas, Praia do Meco, Praia de Fonte de Telha, Cabo Espichel and the Arrábida heights — over a dozen launches packed into a 30-kilometre radius, covering every wind direction from northwest through south to southeast.

Coastal soaring season
Atlantic lift along the Arrábida cliffs is most consistent September through June — ten months of reliable trade wind. July and August are not excluded; the nortada runs stronger but Behrooz works every viable window. Portugal's mild winters draw pilots from northern Europe when their home sites are grounded.
Cross-country season
Seven months of thermals spanning Portugal and Andalusia. From spring's high cloudbase and exceptional distance days to autumn's strong, punchy climbs, the inland season runs consistently deep — and the Iberian XC Tour is scheduled directly into its peak weeks.
Second XC peak
The strongest thermal window of the year. Summer convection builds early across the inland sites — long climbs, high cloudbase and thermal days that run to evening. The peak cross-country conditions in Iberia fall squarely in these weeks.
Coastal & Family Trip
For pilots travelling with partners, family or friends. Mornings on the Arrábida ridge and dune soaring at Costa Caparica under the summer nortada — afternoons open for boat trips, beaches and the old town of Sesimbra. Ground-handling on the sand when the wind picks up and everyone wants a go.
Most pilot trips to Portugal lock in their dates six months ahead — and fly whatever week they happen to land on. Some weeks deliver Atlantic perfection from the first day. Other weeks have a few wind shifts that move the action to different sites. Either way, the date is fixed. We do it differently.
Because Behrooz lives here year-round, you don't need to commit far in advance. Decide your week one or two weeks before — sometimes a few days, occasionally the day before — when the forecast shows where the air will be working best. When the wind window shifts mid-trip, we move with it: Costa Vicentina three hours south, the inland thermal sites, or across the border into Andalusia when Spain opens up. Somewhere on the Iberian peninsula, the air is almost always doing something. The plan is to fly, not to stick to a schedule.
This flexibility works for everyone:
A practical tip on accommodation: hold off on hotel reservations until the trip is confirmed. Sesimbra has plenty of pensions and small hotels with same-week availability — Behrooz will point you to three or four reliable options when the dates lock. The pilots who fly the most days are the ones who didn't book the hotel six months ago.
The goal is simple: more flying days, better flying days. That's what flexibility buys you.
Flying in Portugal follows the same international right-of-way rules you already trained on. The practical checklist for visiting pilots is short:
DHV, SHV, FFVL, BHPA, USHPA — whichever national rating you fly under at home. From A-licence with a confident reverse start upwards. An FAI IPPI Card alongside your licence is welcome but not strictly required for licensed pilots flying privately.
Third-party liability cover valid for Portugal. Standard federation policies (DHV, SHV, FFVL etc.) exceed the Portuguese legal minimum of €150,000 by a comfortable margin. Bring your policy card on the first day.
Your wing, harness, helmet and reserve. The principle: you fly the equipment you trained on. If you need gear, rentals can be arranged on request — including parakites for the Parakite Week. Just let us know what you need when you book.
Some Portuguese flying sites carry seasonal restrictions, especially through the summer holidays. Behrooz lives here year-round and knows exactly which site is open when, where the wind window sits today, and where the weather is breaking. You don't need to figure that out — that's the guiding you're paying for.
Yes — all coaching programmes and flying weeks require a valid licence, from A-licence (with confident reverse start) upwards. Your home-country national licence is accepted without conversion: DHV, SHV, FFVL, BHPA, USHPA and equivalents are all valid in Portugal. You do not need a Portuguese licence. Exception: tandem flights require no licence, no prior experience and no physical preparation whatsoever — they are open to absolutely everyone.
Portugal's Setúbal Peninsula offers flying in every month of the year. Coastal soaring along the Arrábida cliffs is active year-round — September through June is the peak window with the most consistent laminar Atlantic wind, but July and August are not excluded: the northerly sea breeze runs stronger and conditions require careful reading, yet coastal flights remain entirely possible and Behrooz works around every suitable window. The cross-country thermal season peaks from April through October, with long settled days and exceptional visibility across the Alentejo plains. Portugal's mild winters make it a natural choice for pilots from northern Europe — Scandinavia, Germany and the Netherlands — who arrive when their home sites are grounded and leave with a full logbook. Whatever month you fly, private transportation — including a dedicated retrieve vehicle on XC days — is included as part of every programme.
Sesimbra is 30 minutes by car from Lisbon Airport (LIS) — one of Europe's best-connected hubs, with direct flights from across Europe, the UK, North and South America and Africa. Most pilots land and are in the air the same afternoon.
The main sites include the Arrábida natural park cliffs, Praia das Bicas, Cabo Espichel and the Alberta Nova dunes — all within 30–40 minutes. For inland cross-country flying, Setúbal, Évora and Serra da Estrela are in range. When conditions favour it, the programme extends into Andalusia, Spain.
Every day includes: daily weather briefing, site and hazard briefing, harness check, radio for every pilot, soaring instruction, cobra and reverse launch coaching, ground-handling practice, video and photos of your day, and evening track-log analysis. Private transfer from your accommodation to the launch — and back — is included every day across all programmes. On XC and combo days, full outlanding retrieval is included too.

Absolutely. Tandem flights are open to everyone — not just people accompanying a pilot. Solo visitors, couples, families, and first-timers are all welcome to book. Flights take off from the Sesimbra coastline with a qualified pilot. No experience or licence needed.
No booking form, no deposit. Send a WhatsApp message or email with your licence level, preferred programme and rough dates. Behrooz replies personally within hours, and most enquiries become bookings the same evening. You can often confirm just 1–2 weeks ahead — when the forecast shows the best flying window.
Payment is made directly to Behrooz — no booking platforms, no agencies, no middlemen. No deposit is required to hold your place. Once your reservation is confirmed, Behrooz will send payment details. Everything is handled personally and directly between you and your instructor.
We offer free cancellation on all programmes and services — coastal soaring, cross-country tours, tandem flights and skill courses. Cancellations requested less than 7 days before the session are subject to a 5% administrative fee, with 95% refunded. Cancellations requested 7 or more days before the scheduled session are free of charge — no fee is applied and any amount paid is refunded in full.
Cancellations requested less than 7 days before the scheduled session are subject to a 5% administrative fee. The remaining 95% of any amount paid will be refunded. Each cancellation request is reviewed individually by Behrooz Jafarzadeh.
