Sesimbra is 30 minutes south of Lisbon Airport, on one of Portugal's most dramatic Atlantic coastlines. The cliffs are high, the views are wide, and the tandem flights are genuinely impressive — not a sanitised tourist experience but a real flight above the sea, with a qualified instructor who knows this coast intimately. For a stag weekend that stands out, a morning of tandem flights followed by an afternoon on the beach and an evening in the harbour restaurants is a difficult combination to beat.
Why Sesimbra Works for a Stag Weekend
The combination of accessibility, authenticity, and activity is rare. Sesimbra is close enough to Lisbon to reach from the airport in 30 minutes, which means no long transfer on arrival and no logistical headache. It is a real Portuguese fishing town — not a resort — which means the food is excellent, the prices are honest, and the atmosphere is relaxed without being sterile.
For a group doing tandem paragliding, the setting is dramatic. You launch from the cliff above the town, gain altitude over the Atlantic, and spend 15–30 minutes in the air with views of the Arrábida mountains, the Setúbal Peninsula coastline, and the open ocean. It is quiet up there, which surprises most people. And it is fast — from harness fitting on the cliff to your feet back on the ground takes about an hour per person, which means a group of eight can all fly in a morning without anyone waiting too long.
Tandem Flights — What to Expect
Every member of the group flies with Behrooz or an authorised tandem pilot. No experience is needed. No fitness requirement beyond the ability to run a few steps on launch. No age limit that would affect a typical stag group.
The flight itself:
- Duration: 15–30 minutes depending on conditions
- Maximum altitude: typically 150–300 m above take-off
- What you do: sit in the tandem harness, the pilot handles everything
- What you feel: the lift-off, the silence, the views — and sometimes gentle soaring as the pilot works the ridge lift
- What you don't feel: fear of heights, for most people — the sensation is different from looking over the edge of a cliff
If one or more members of the stag group already holds a paragliding licence, Behrooz can arrange a ground handling session on the dunes while the rest of the group is doing their tandem flights. This keeps everyone active and flying at their own level simultaneously.
The Day Structure
A typical stag weekend in Sesimbra looks like this:
- Morning (9–12h): Tandem flights at the cliff launch above Sesimbra. Group gathers at a central meeting point; Behrooz does a short briefing; flights run in sequence. Coffee and pastelaria at the cliff café between flights.
- Early afternoon (12–14h): Lunch in town. The harbour has seafood restaurants at every price point — from a working-fisherman's grilled fish lunch to a longer meal with wine. Both are genuinely good.
- Afternoon (14–18h): Sesimbra beach is a 10-minute walk from the launch area. The town beach is sheltered and swimmable from April to October. Alternatively: kayaking from the harbour, a boat trip along the coast, or simply wandering the town.
- Evening (19h onwards): The harbour restaurants open for dinner. Sesimbra's seafood is among the best on the Setúbal Peninsula — percebes (barnacles), fresh fish, grilled octopus, local wine. The town has bars along the seafront for the later part of the evening.
Accommodation for Groups
Sesimbra has hotels and guesthouses across a range of budgets. For a group of six to twelve:
- Hotels in town — several have rooms for groups, including some with sea views. Book 6–8 weeks ahead in summer.
- Airbnb apartments — larger apartments and villas are available within 15–20 minutes of Sesimbra. Useful for groups that want to self-cater for one meal.
- Lisbon base + day trip — some stag groups prefer to stay in Lisbon and do the Sesimbra day trip. This works logistically and gives more evening options, but the Lisbon drive back after a day of flying and eating is less appealing than walking to your hotel.
What if Some of the Group Won't Fly?
It happens. Some people prefer not to fly, and that is fine. Non-flying members of the group can watch from the clifftop (the views are excellent even from the ground), explore the town, take a boat trip from the harbour, or head to the beach. Sesimbra has enough to occupy a non-flying afternoon without anyone feeling left out.
How to Organise
Contact Behrooz directly on WhatsApp with the group size, preferred dates, and any questions. He responds quickly and can advise on logistics, availability, and pricing for group bookings. There is no deposit required to hold a provisional date while the group coordinates travel arrangements.
For groups flying from the UK, easyJet and Ryanair both serve Lisbon from several UK airports. Flight time is about 2 hours 20 minutes. Sesimbra is 30 minutes south by car or Uber.
